Rio Office Opening Continues

Commitment to Strategic Growth

Editor's Note: This is one in a series of Q&As with Baker Botts partners on the opening today of Baker Botts, a foreign legal consultancy in Rio de Janeiro that represents a major step in the expansion of Baker Botts L.L.P.'s highly-regarded energy and disputes resolution practices throughout Latin America.

As International Partner in Charge, what is the firm’s strategy when considering expansion in an existing market?

JB: When we consider expanding into a new market, we often seek to build upon the firm’s strategic objectives. We typically try to put building blocks in place that will position us on the road to achieving our broader objectives and enable us to build toward them over time. Beyond that, we ordinarily are inclined to play to our strengths, but to be attuned to opportunities that make good business sense as they may arise, whether they are strictly within our original strategic focus or not.

Aside from Rio, which Latin American markets are attractive to the firm from a growth standpoint?

JB: Baker Botts has been in Latin America for more than 60 years. The new office in Rio de Janeiro is our first in the region since we were forced to sever our equity relationship with the local partners in our Mexico City office in the early 1970's after the local government prohibited all foreign participation in local law firms. We like the outlook for Mexico today, and so that is something we are keeping our eye on.

Do you see the Brazilian operations as a key driver for firm growth moving forward? Why?

JB: This is an historic moment in the development of Brazil’s oil and gas sector, and Rio de Janeiro is the epicenter of this activity so it’s a natural fit for us. We see Brazil as an important growth market for the firm as it develops significant hydrocarbon reserves on and offshore. We are very attuned to the opportunities in the region, and I am certain that our practice will be a significant factor in the firm’s overall international profile.
