Andrew Baker is the managing partner of Baker Botts. Mr. Baker began his practice in 1979 in the Houston office. In 1985 he moved to Dallas, Texas, to open Baker Botts’ Dallas office. In the spring of 2012, he became the firm’s 14th managing partner in the 173-year history of the firm and relocated back to Houston.

What are the firm’s strategic reasons for opening an office in Rio de Janeiro?

AB: We are always looking for opportunities to align operations in order to be best positioned to deliver superior service to our clients, wherever in the world they need it. As our clients’ activities are shaped by the globalization taking place in the world economy, we view international markets as key growth areas for the firm. Latin America is a natural area of growth for us since it touches on so many strengths of Baker Botts, including energy, project development, financing and disputes.


What about the firm’s culture do you think makes it a good fit for the Brazilian market?

AB: Community is a signature trait of the Latin American culture. Similarly, our firm embraces teamwork and pooling resources to provide superior service to our clients. Our lawyers have developed innovative ways of assisting clients in business ventures in Latin America such as Business and Environmental Law in Latin America (BELLA), which permits member clients to pool resources and share the costs associated with monitoring environmental laws, regulations, policies and enforcement actions in the region. The firm also developed an international network of premier Latin American law firms to provide clients access to regulations and information on cross-border environmental issues.


What is your vision for the firm in the next 2-3 years?

AB: We are committed to providing creative and effective solutions for our clients' most important challenges, wherever they may be. Globalization is upon us -- that’s for certain. Over the next two to three years, we see unparalleled growth opportunities in markets outside the U.S., because of our core strengths, our people and our clients. We will continue to strategically evaluate our presence in key global markets, such as Brazil, in order to achieve our goal of being one of the world’s premier law firms serving the energy industry.
